The Best Ways to Buy Beads in Bulk

When you first start out beading, every purchase is a careful decision. You weigh whether to get glass beads or seed beads, or you see a set of acrylic beads and debate what color combo would go best with your latest project. Over time, your sense of what you want will crystallize, however, and then it is time to consider buying beads in bulk.

There are a number of ways to go about this, and to start with, consider your local crafts shop. Many times these places will have deals, but even when they do not, you can sometimes negotiate your own. To do this, you need to first be a regular in the shop, and then develop a relationship with the staff (ideally the owner or a manager).

As they get to know you and you show a willingness to buy, you have some leverage to request bulk pricing. For this, you would simply say that you want to buy X beads all at once, and ask if there is anything they can do on pricing. This does not always work out, but if you can make it happen this is the easiest way to get bulk pricing.

The next option is to comb the Internet for good bead buying opportunities. The good news is that you are guaranteed to find a bulk deal somewhere, but the bad news is that it can sometimes take ridiculous amounts of digging to turn these up. You may have to search for hours to find a great price on a single bead that you want.

The happy medium here is to find a bead wholesaler to work with personally. These companies supply retail shops and online entities at lower prices, and fortunately it is possible to work with them as an individual. It does take some digging, however, as you first have to accomplish two goals.

The first is that if you do not have a formal business, then you may not be able to work with many wholesalers, who require proof of business before supplying you. For these, unless you have a business, you will simply have to work around them and find someone who does not ask for anything to show that you are a business.

Secondly, you want to find wholesalers whose bulk orders are not too big. If you only go through 100 beads a month, then having to buy in lots of 1,000 will fast become a problem. Work around this by looking for wholesalers who both do not require proof of business and who also supply reasonable order limits.

The best option is going to depend on your situation. For beginners, I would focus on shopping at a start. Once you have a sense of what you want, buying large quantities online becomes more worthwhile. If you consistently go through large inventories, then investigate wholesale options.

By investigating your options, you can find good choices for buying beads in bulk. It may indeed take some digging, especially for online treasure hunting for deals, but it can quickly become a key way for keeping your crafting well-stocked without paying too much.

Cody Everette took an interest in crafting, and quickly got some valuable lessons in how to get good deals...after an embarrassing incident involving way too much money for way too few "special" acrylic beads.
